Ultra-low phase noise microwave generation
Microwave sources with ultra-low phase noise are crucial for satellite communications, radar detection, precision measurement, and synchronization systems. Currently, the most mature technology for stable microwave signal synthesis is based on up-converting the radio frequency signal from an oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO). This method inevitably leads to secondary amplification of additional phase noise. Photonic microwave technology represents a revolutionary advancement in microwave signal synthesis. The optical pulse sequence of an optical frequency comb has excellent stability and extremely low noise. Using fiber loop optical-microwave phase detectors (FLOM-PD) technology, the frequency stability of the optical frequency comb can be coherently transferred to a dielectric resonator oscillator, significantly reducing optical phase noise to levels previously considered physically unattainable. The phase noise level is far superior to OCXO or room-temperature sapphire oscillator solutions.
